A GIFT OF CASH
Recruits, screens, places and supports a member for one year.
Members spend more than 155 hours a month with individuals who are low-income and experience daily poverty. Members come from all over the country to join Change A Heart, often just out of college. Change A Heart fully screens applicants and matches them with a mutually beneficial social service organization and direct service position. This means members serve in a service field that matches their interest in alignment with their skills and talents. Change A Heart supports members in their positions and with the social service organizations by meeting with members and their supervisor three times a year and completing monthly performance evaluations.
Provides safe, supportive housing for a member for one month.
Room and board for members is more than a roof over their heads, having a roommate, and food in the refrigerator. It is an opportunity to live in an urban neighborhood (for many members this is their first experience) and in solidarity with those they serve. Living in simple community is not just to provide a social venue or to conform to popular culture in “being green.” The purpose of living in simple community is twofold: (1) to allow development of effective communication tools needed for any relationship such as listening skills, conflict resolution, selflessness, responsibility, forgiveness, flexibility, establish healthy boundaries, self examination, enhanced teamwork and collaboration, learn to handle conflict positively, further develop problem solving skills and demonstrate ability to share self spiritually (2) make household decisions to reduce mindless consumption such as reducing use of technology, electricity, water consumption and purchasing local food items.
Provides a spiritual retreat opportunity for a hard-working member to reflect on their experience.
Provide a retreat opportunity for 10 members to reflect and pray about their experiences to allow for personal growth in areas such as self-awareness, selflessness, listening, communication and forgiveness using the example of St. Francis of Assisi as a way to deepen members' relationship with God, neighbor and self.
Encourages a monthly meal with members and Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.
Change A Heart was founded in 1999 by the Sisters of St. Francis as a way to share and pass on their Franciscan spirit to young lay people so they may further live out the Gospel values of service and justice among those who are marginalized. According to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious upon reflection of the August 2011 Assembly, it is a growing challenge to nurture intercultural and intergenerational relationships as new models of community. Change A Heart provides a variety of opportunities for members and sisters to engage with one another. Some examples include monthly supper together at the convent, each member is matched with a sister to be a prayer companion, and members interact with sisters when on retreat at the convent. Change A Heart members actively and intentionally put their faith into action throughout their experience. According to a recent study by Pew Internet & American Life Project (Dec 2011), involvement in religious organizations tend to go hand-in-hand with participation in civic organizations and a positive outlook on their community.
Provides transportation for a member to get to social service organization for a month.
The poverty rate in Allegheny County is 12.3% (U.S. Census Bureau 2012). Change A Heart members serve at nonprofit social service organizations all over the Pittsburgh region that strive to overcome some of the greatest challenges people in our area face, namely: poverty, homelessness, addictions, mental illness, illiteracy, hunger and illness. Members use public transportation to get to their service site each day. Each household is also provided one vehicle to aid in daily transportation.
Allows members to participate in one community building activity.
Change A Heart encourages members to gather once a week to participate in a fun, educational, active, or informational event with one another. This encourages members to communicate with one another and helps to build relationships amongst themselves and with others throughout the city. The weekly gathering also contributes to economic growth of the city as members support local businesses.
Enables members to participate in work-related training and development.
This experience is not a “year off” but a “year on” as members learn valuable workforce skills that build upon their academic learning. Focused training helps members build confidence in their skills. It also enhances their performance. Training is crucial as it provides members tools now so they can continue to be successful in their future.
Provides one month of formational supplies for a member's personal and spiritual growth and development.
Change A Heart delights in providing spiritual resources for its members. This can include books and articles, but also one-on-one mentoring time with a member. Often, time spent face-to- face is more valuable and influential for a member because it restores the value of human interaction rather than through the internet or via social media.
